So why do optical illusions arise?

Based on the above:

At each stage of perception processing, distortions, errors, failures occur, but the brain processes the information received and makes the necessary adjustments. These processes are unconscious in nature. Thus, many defects created by the optical system associated with a change in the position of the entrance pupil are eliminated. In cases where the subconscious processing of information is insufficient or redundant, an optical illusion occurs.

Why is a spinning spiral used in hypnosis?
